In 1928, Edward Crawley purchased a piece of land on Somerset Road, donated the entire cost of building a Catholic Church to replace his only choices of a chapel in Dockyard, or St. Edwards Chapel in Hamilton, (later to become the St. Theresa's Cathedral). The church erected a plaque to the Crawley family and it can be seen on the wall next to the original entrance to St. Joseph's Church acknowledging their generous gift.

When St. Edward's Church in Hamilton was closed St. Joseph's became the oldest Catholic Church in Bermuda and graces the corner of Somerset Road and Broome Street with its creamy pastel tones, in the Bermudian tradition of pastel coloured buildings.
